Message from the Secretary

Mr. Abhay Kumar Akela

Secretary, Disha Vihar

“Rebuilding an egalitarian society by embracing Gandhian, Lohia, JP, and Ambedkar ideologies since 1995.”

Official Statement

Friends, Jai Jagat.

"Disha Vihar" is a social and cultural organization established on March 30, 1995. Its objective was to play a pivotal role in rebuilding an egalitarian society by embracing the ideologies of Gandhi, Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, and Ambedkar. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, on July 17, 2002.

In collaboration with CRY (Child Rights and You), the organization began working in January 2005, focusing on children's education, health, participation, and protection. Its operational scope extended to 80 villages across the Munger, Lakhisarai, and Banka districts. Under this project, initiatives were launched to raise awareness about child rights and the common school system, study the status of children, and foster cooperation between the community and the government to address issues such as child marriage, child labour, non-enrollment, and school dropouts.

Under this project, the Bihar Bal Awaaz Manch was formed to raise awareness among children about their rights and foster leadership skills. In 2016, with support from TDH Germany, a project was launched for children in the mica-mining area of Chakai block in Jamui district. Additionally, in collaboration with NABARD, Disha Vihar formed Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Munger district starting in 2003, promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Over the years, Disha Vihar has partnered with organizations like Oxfam India, CASA, Pathfinder, and ITC to implement projects focused on disaster management, women's empowerment, health, and vocational training, benefiting thousands of marginalized families across Bihar and Jharkhand.

Success Stories

A Story of Protection and Rehabilitation

Khairsala, Jamui, Bihar

Mahi Kumari is a 9-year-old girl. After her mother passed away, there was no one left to care for Mahi at home, so she was sent to live with a relative. Over time, Mahi faced many difficulties there, deprived of love and care, and was made to do most of the household chores. Her education was halted, and she became mentally disturbed and insecure.

The village youth group, trained by Disha Vihar, learned of this and spoke to Mahi. Initially hesitant, she eventually shared her condition. The youth group immediately contacted the Child Welfare Committee. Following an investigation, they ensured Mahi was placed in a safe environment.

Result: With the help of the community and the CWC, Mahi is now living in a safe, nurturing environment, actively studying, and building a bright future.

Tribal Youth Secure a Community Center

Dhamna Dih, Jamui, Bihar

Dhamna Dih, a remote tribal village situated 70km from the district HQ, lacked any public community shelter. Village meetings and programs had to be held in open fields, which isolated youth and women. Seeing this, the village youth committee mobilized.

They submitted a structured petition to District Council Member Mrs. Saloni Murmu. Thanks to continuous youth follow-up, the government department approved the budget and construction began. The community center building is scheduled for completion in May 2025.

Result: This initiative boosted the confidence of tribal youth and created a collective space for social harmony and active community development.
